Sapsucker Woods: Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca NY

On Labor Day Monday, we birded Sapsucker Woods which surrounds the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. For birders it's like birding at the mother ship. The weather was warm and got warmer and more humid as the morning progressed. We began walking the mulch covered trails (genius as our footfalls were muffled) at 7:30 and were done by 10:30. We saw over 30 species in the various habitats: meadow, forest wetland, ponds, and hardwood forest of beech and birch among others. The late summer wildflowers of aster goldenrod, Indian paintbrush, Queen Anne's lace, and many more practically glowed in the shade and sunshine. And cones of pine dripped sap.

Sapsucker Woods lived up to its name as we did see two Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. We managed to  photograph several birds that weren't too camera shy---

Green Heron taking an early morning stretch:

Belted Kingfisher clattering from a power-line:

Black-capped Chickadee:

 Song Sparrow:

Eastern Phoebe:
